Register Your Team For Band Boosters Golf Outing

Register Your Team to Participate in the Charles F. Smith Golf Outing to Support Lancaster Band Scholarships

Play a round of golf with your friends while supporting the future of a student in the Lancaster Bands program. The Charles F. Smith Memorial Golf Outing will be held on August 27, 2022 at Valley View Golf Club. All proceeds from the annual event go directly into the Lancaster Bands Scholarship Fund and are awarded to selected senior band program students who are continuing their education beyond high school.

“This event is important because year after year we are able to recognize these amazing seniors and their dedication to the band program and help support them in furthering their educations,” said Event Chair Chrissy Kittle.

While Kittle is excited to raise money to support the Lancaster Bands Scholarship Fund, this particular event is close to her heart for another reason. Charles F. Smith, the man the event is named for, was her father. Smith learned through his children about how the impact of band went far beyond music.

“It began when my sister started marching band in 1996,” said Kittle. “My dad saw all of the opportunities that band could bring for students. He didn’t have a musical bone in his body and couldn’t keep a beat to save his life, but he saw the benefits of the program for all students, not just his own.”

Smith volunteered his time to help the band even after his children had graduated. He drove equipment trucks, hauled equipment, and helped load and unload equipment. Smith served on the band boosters, volunteered for the weekly Sunday Band Booster Bingo and the annual fair booth. He also helped set up for the annual Percussion Ensemble concert. He did all of this up until he passed away in 2010.

“My dad would give his time and energy to help anyone in any way that he could and was very committed,” said Kittle. “Volunteering for Lancaster Bands was just one of the many ways he gave back.”

Kittle says she knows that her dad would be thrilled to see how the golf outing and scholarships help band students.

“Each year, four or five seniors receive a scholarship,” said Kittle. “The students must be active in the band program and furthering their education with a two- or four-year degree. They could be in marching band, concert band, winter guard or any of the ensembles that the band offers. Scholarship amounts range from $400-$500 for each student.”

The annual golf outing is a four-man scramble format with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost is $340 a team which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, prizes, drinks and a catered dinner. The deadline to register by mail is August 1st. The deadline to register by phone or in person is up to the day of the event.
